Cincinnati Union Terminal Murals
The biggest set of these spaces was set aside for a series of murals that would depict the cultural heritage of the united states and cincinnati with a particular emphasis on local industry.
Cincinnati union terminal murals. Representing a range of cincinnati industries and its workforce including the formica. Union terminal in cincinnati ohio is a famous art deco building that has been used as a train station to varying amounts since the 1930s. Winold reiss a german born artist designed murals made from glass mosaic tiles to decorate the interior of the terminal. Inspired by the monumental mosaic worker murals series created by winold reiss for cincinnatis union terminal opening in 1933 matt lynch cincinnati oh and curtis goldstein columbus oh combine their respective backgrounds in alternative applications for industrial materials and collage and mural painting to create worksurface a suite of laser cut formica high pressure laminate mosaics.
The murals installed along the concourse walls were moved to the greater cincinnati airport before the concourse not the rotunda was demolished in 1972. The artwork originally was located in the train concourse at cincinnati union terminal until they were moved to the airport in 1973 a year before the train concourse was razed. Having grown up in cincinnati i saw all of these winold reiss mosaic murals in the cincinnati union terminal. These murals proudly stand among cincinnatis signature works of art said longtime local columnist cliff radel who extensively covered the history of the murals and the men who are depicted in them.
It is perhaps more famous for the museum that now takes up most of the building as well as the theater and library that it also houses. When paul cret and roland wank reworked the original union terminal design they created space inside the terminal for a vast collection of public art. The artwork associated with union terminal was as amazing as the physical structure. I do not know if all of the murals re located to the airport are still there.
